Gold & Silver Dealings Limited was established in North Shields in 1983. Originally many customers coming in to sell goods would prefer to pledge (pawn) these articles and so we saw a niche in the market and decided to offer a Pawnbroking service, the oldest established in North Shields.

Through his great acts of kindness and generosity, Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of many; of seafaring men, marriageable young women, of the falsely accused, of endangered travellers, of farmers, of children (of course - Santa Claus), of merchants, and of pawnbrokers. Pawnbrokers and bankers in northern Italy, who would look to Saint Nicholas as their patron saint, would hang three golden balls above the doors of their shops in tribute to, and for good luck from, their Saint Nicholas. Originally the balls were either golden or blue, blue would have been a more fitting colour as this probably came from the coat of arms of the Medici's. Pawnbroking has existed since the 13th Century and perhaps one of its most famous customers Queen Isabella of Spain who was said to have pawned her jewels so Christopher Columbus could go in search of what was to become America, such illustrious company indeed! The Nursery Rhyme
"Pop Goes The Weasel" refers to pawning. A weasel is a shoemaker's
tool and to "pop" is to pawn. "That's the way the money goes...
Pop goes the weasel."
